Abbeville sits north of Oxford on Highway 7 heading toward Sardis Lake, and the county here is a mix of small farms, older homesteads, and newer homes built on cleared timber land as Oxford's growth pushes north.
The soil changes noticeably once you're past College Hill heading toward Abbeville, sandier and looser in places, which means pines out here tend to blow over root and all in strong straight-line winds rather than snapping mid-trunk like the clay-rooted oaks closer to town.

Rural property patterns
Most calls in Abbeville come from farms and homesteads with mature shade trees around the house and pine stands out back that were planted for pulpwood decades ago. As those stands mature and thin naturally, the remaining trees get more wind exposure and start going down in clusters during summer thunderstorms.
Storm history near Sardis Lake
Straight-line wind events coming off Sardis Lake hit this stretch of Highway 7 hard because there's little to break the wind across the reservoir. We've cleared plenty of driveways here after derecho-style events where a dozen pines went down across a single property in one storm.
Access and utilities
Tallahatchie Valley Electric Power Association serves much of this area, and lines often run along the road right of way through wooded sections, so we coordinate carefully on any removal near the power easement.
